Our friend Mary Southerland has completed her voyage of awareness for PTSD!
Mary, who is a member of Holladay UCC and spoke to our church in July before leaving on her journey, kayaked the length of the Ohio River, from Pittsburgh, Pa., to the confluence with the Mississippi River – 981 miles.
Along the way, Mary spoke at churches to raise awareness about post-traumatic stress disorder. Mary was a government contractor in Iraq and suffers from PTSD. She and her service dog, Henry, made the trip in 54 days, beginning on Aug. 4 and finishing on Sept. 29. Bernie and Marita Hart, friends of our church, served as her support team.
You can find much more about the trip – including many photos – by going to her Facebook page: “Awareness Underway.”
