LYRICS

Many versions exist. This one is perhaps one of the better known.

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree,
How lovely are your branches!
In beauty green will always grow
Through summer sun and winter snow.
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
How lovely are your branches!

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree,
You are the tree most loved!
How often you give us delight
In brightly shining Christmas light!
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree,
You are the tree most loved!

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree,
Your beauty green will teach me
That hope and love will ever be
The way to joy and peace for me.
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree,
Your beauty green will teach me.

ABOUT THE CAROL

Titled “O Tannenbaum” in its original German form, “O Christmas Tree” was a song extolling the virtue of unwavering fidelity long before it became a popular Christmas carol.

The song’s melody in based on an old folk tune that dates back more than 500 years — a 16th-century Silesian folk song by Melchior Franck, “Ach Tannenbaum.” (“Tannenbaum” is the German word for “fir tree.”)

In 1819, Joachim August Zarnack wrote a tragic love song inspired by the folk song, using the always-green, “faithful” fir in contrast to a faithless lover.

In 1824, composer Ernst Anschütz added two verses to Zamack’s first, traditional verse, transforming the song into a carol about the German custom of the Christmas tree. As the popularity of Christmas trees spread to England and the United States in the mid-1800s, so did the song.

Many traditional and contemporary English versions exist of “O Christmas Tree.” The tune is used for the state songs of Iowa, Maryland, Michigan and New Jersey.

Like the tree that remains greens in the heat of summer and the cold of winter, God remains ever faithful and every loving to me. May my faith be courageous and strong. Amen.
