Back in June, when Ogden CUCC had a mini-health fair, I started walking Beus pond on Tuesday evenings with the walking group. It was lovely to watch the birds on the water and in the trees, but the best part was walking with friends and the conversations and new friendships that came about. I also experienced wonderful health effects and was able to walk longer and faster. Since the holidays are over, I am excited about starting to walk the pond again. Please join me at this wonderful little "sanctuary" in the city on Saturday mornings at 11:00. My phone number is 801-737-3667 if you need a contact.

Gage, what a beautiful memory about a dear child of God! I frequently wish he were still here to offer his wisdom and spirituality to me, but I rejoice that he was a part of the foundation that I continue to build upon. Thanks for the smile...

What talent! The one of Cisco, Utah reminds me of living on the plains of Colorado. These pictures feel like you could step right into them.

Thanks for sharing this story, Kim. It does seem harder to make someone the "other" when we not only know their names but also have a closer look into their lives. Unfortunately, it takes less effort to hate from afar than it does to love up close. Three cheers for your Dad for loving up close!

Thought I'd give this a try. On #5, Perhaps Lazarus is named to bring the experience of helping the poor to a a personal level. When someone has a name and is personally known, the encounter becomes much more intense and clear. A modern day example is the undocumented immigrant issue. Dad, for years has talked about how immigrants should be hustled back across the border and if needed- take a "John Wayne" (guns, violence) attitude to keep them from crossing the border into the US. He has always talked about undocumented immigrants as a nebulous, unknown group of people who are worthless human beings. Well, in the last three months he has become acquainted with a 19 year-old Hispanic woman, struck up a friendship, and thinks she is the sweetest, kindest young woman trying her best in life. She doesn't have much money, has a young child, is supporting her extended family, and wants to be a productive, happy citizen in the USA. After their friendship developed, one day she confided in him that she is undocumented. Not only that, but her mother and sibling are undocumented too. To make a lot story short, because this young woman has a name, is an actual, living body and has become a "real person" to him, he has given her money, emotional support and has helped her find legal advice to figure out what she can do so she and her family does not have to go back to Mexico. All of this from a man would rant and rave about those worthless immigrants sneaking across the border. I can tell Dad has gone back and revisited his beliefs on immigration and has backed off from the volatile politics such as the Governor of Arizona has promoted. After watching all this happen, I did say to him one day, "Dad, it gives a little different perspective when someone who is in pain, and in need comes knocking at our door. The politics fall away and what we see is a fellow human being. He kinda grinned, (it is hard for him to admit he changed his mind) and said, "Yes, it does take on a different perspective." This woman, whose name is Nadia, metaphorically (like Lazarus) landed on Dad's doorstep and made Dad a more compassionate man because she provided a face and a name on the immigration issues for him. Personally, I experience this a lot at school. I may make judgments about various issues, but after establishing close relationships with students and their families I become much more understanding and patient because I am faced with human beings I care about.
