Few of us know real hunger – what the body goes through after days, or even weeks, with little or no food.
During the Mission:1 campaign, we each have a chance to get just the smallest idea of what that feels like. CUCC will be selling 11-hour fasting “shifts,” 24 of them in all. Each shift costs from $3 to $5 (the contributor chooses how much to contribute). The money we raise will go toward the UCC’s fund to help famine victims in East Africa. You can sign up for shifts at church.
If you are not able to fast, you can sponsor others who can fast by paying for their shifts.
Those who choose to fast should:
* Be sure you are healthy enough to fast. You should check with your doctor first.
* Choose for yourself what “fasting” means. If you need to eat a little something when taking medication, by all means do it! If you start to feel sick while you are fasting, then eat something! If it makes it easier to fast if you drink some juice throughout your shift, do it. There are no rules but your own.
* Plan in advance what to do when the hunger pangs become difficult. Prayer? Meditation? Someone to call and talk with?
* Take time to understand what you are doing. This is an exercise in understanding.
