The Pastor’s Discretionary FundIt has been the policy of this congregation to support a small discretionary fund for the pastor to help people in need both members and people in the community and it is the obligation of the pastor to let the congregation know when the fund is getting low. In 2007, this fund received a generous total of $750.00 and the year-end balance in the fund was $341.41 as reported in the 2007 annual report of the church. To this point in 2008 no request has been necessary, but now, as we enter into autumn and the colder weather of winter, it is time to ask. The current balance is down to $71.95. Do We Want to be A "Green Church"?I have been wondering how much interest there is within our church to become a "Green Church?" There certainly seems to me to be a lot of interest at our church, however, I am working in the wind energy industry and may be too closely aligned with renewable green energy to be objective, so here’s where I think our church leaders will need to know where each of you are. First I think that we would want to define what we and others in our State and Country would consider a "Green Church." Paying a little more for green power through Rocky Mountain Power’s "Blue Sky" Program might be one step a "Green Church" and its members would take. Practicing energy conservation by the church and its members could be another step. Supporting initiatives at the Federal and State level to promote and advance renewable energy and energy efficiency could be another. I am certain there are also many other steps that a church may want to take on a path toward becoming a "Green Church." One step that is available now here in our State is to join Governor Huntsman’s initiative "Power Utah’s Future." This initiative states that it "offers a united voice for diverse constituents and stakeholders to support a vibrant, clean, balanced and secure energy future for Utah." Powering Utah’s Future is a consortium of businesses, organizations, local governments, and citizens that support achieving Governor Huntsman’s goal of a 20% increase in energy efficiency by 2015 and achieving Utah’s 20% renewable electricity target by 2025 ahead of schedule. If you wish to find out more information about this initiative you can visit Powering Utah’s Future’s website at www.poweringutahsfuture.org. Copies of the Declaration of Support and Commitment Survey for Powering Utah’s Future are available at the entrance to our church. This fall I will be encouraging your Church Council to consider having our church declare its support for Powering Utah’s Future. Please let your Church Council members know how you feel about this and our becoming a "Green Church." Peace and Love, Marion Horna, Assistant Moderator |

Mission Opportunity to Mexico in January 2009Equal Exchange Fair Trade Coffee together with the United Church of Christ and the Church of the Brethren are coordinating a delegation to Chiapas, Mexico to meet with local activists and visit some of the coffee farming co-operatives who grow your coffee. They are seeking to recruit delegates who would enjoy an intense learning experience and would look forward to sharing it with their community and otherwise incorporating it into their activism. If this is something you are interested in, a description of the delegation and copies of the application are available on the table in the church foyer and on our Fair Trade Coffee table. |
