Tenth Annual Fair Trade Sale
Friday and Saturday, October 17 & 18

Can you believe this will be our 10th annual Fair Trade Sale? What a wonderful Mission outreach this is for our church and our community. Over the past 9 years our efforts have brought encouragement and income to many people in developing parts of the world. This year I’d like to offer items from 10 different Fair Trade organizations, and in other ways celebrate this tenth anniversary. Let me know of any ideas you have along these lines.

The sale will be from 5 to 8 pm on Friday and 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday. Once again we’ll have volunteers from Ten Thousand Villages here on Saturday with items from their Salt Lake City store. We’ll have soup, bread, desserts and beverages available during the sale for supper and lunch. People are needed to contact and select items from various Fair Trade organizations, to plan our menus and coordinate food, to plan the display of items, to design some child-friendly Fair Trade handouts, and to help get the word out. If you’d like to help, please contact Carolyn Somer at 782-5668.

The Pastor’s Discretionary Fund

It has been the policy of this congregation to support a small discretionary fund for the pastor to help people in need both members and people in the community and it is the obligation of the pastor to let the congregation know when the fund is getting low.

In 2007, this fund received a generous total of $750.00 and the year-end balance in the fund was $341.41 as reported in the 2007 annual report of the church.

To this point in 2008 no request has been necessary, but now, as we enter into autumn and the colder weather of winter, it is time to ask. The current balance is down to $71.95.

YCC Fund Raiser - Real Men Can Cook
September 19

The annual Your Community Connection (YCC) fund raiser "Real Men Can Cook" will be held on September 19th at the Union Station, lunch from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm and dinner at 5:30 pm. Cost is $10 or a cash contribution of any amount. The YCC was established to make a difference by helping families at risk.

The proceeds of this event will assist in continuing critical programs and services for at-risk families in Northern Utah. Last Fiscal year, the YCC provided 510 women and children with safety and shelter in their Domestic Violence Victims Assistance Center. Your community-minded generosity in support of this event will ensure that those in need receive assistance.

Do We Want to be A "Green Church"?

I have been wondering how much interest there is within our church to become a "Green Church?" There certainly seems to me to be a lot of interest at our church, however, I am working in the wind energy industry and may be too closely aligned with renewable green energy to be objective, so here’s where I think our church leaders will need to know where each of you are.

First I think that we would want to define what we and others in our State and Country would consider a "Green Church." Paying a little more for green power through Rocky Mountain Power’s "Blue Sky" Program might be one step a "Green Church" and its members would take. Practicing energy conservation by the church and its members could be another step. Supporting initiatives at the Federal and State level to promote and advance renewable energy and energy efficiency could be another. I am certain there are also many other steps that a church may want to take on a path toward becoming a "Green Church."

One step that is available now here in our State is to join Governor Huntsman’s initiative "Power Utah’s Future." This initiative states that it "offers a united voice for diverse constituents and stakeholders to support a vibrant, clean, balanced and secure energy future for Utah."  Powering Utah’s Future is a consortium of businesses, organizations, local governments, and citizens that support achieving Governor Huntsman’s goal of a 20% increase in energy efficiency by 2015 and achieving Utah’s 20% renewable electricity target by 2025 ahead of schedule.

If you wish to find out more information about this initiative you can visit Powering Utah’s Future’s website at www.poweringutahsfuture.org.

Copies of the Declaration of Support and Commitment Survey for Powering Utah’s Future are available at the entrance to our church. This fall I will be encouraging your Church Council to consider having our church declare its support for Powering Utah’s Future. Please let your Church Council members know how you feel about this and our becoming a "Green Church."

Mission Opportunity to Mexico in January 2009

Equal Exchange Fair Trade Coffee together with the United Church of Christ and the Church of the Brethren are coordinating a delegation to Chiapas, Mexico to meet with local activists and visit some of the coffee farming co-operatives who grow your coffee. They are seeking to recruit delegates who would enjoy an intense learning experience and would look forward to sharing it with their community and otherwise incorporating it into their activism.

If this is something you are interested in, a description of the delegation and copies of the application are available on the table in the church foyer and on our Fair Trade Coffee table.

Recycling Opportunities

Our Aluminum Recycling Cans and Newspaper Recycling Bin are  at the East end of the parking lot beside the paper recycling bin.  Recycling cans and paper and magazines provides double blessings - one it cleans up the environment and reduces waste in our dumps, and two the money earned goes to our mission and ministry.  Money from recycled aluminum cans goes to St. Anne's Center in Ogden.

Share

We regularly provide food donations to SHARE, a local emergency food delivery service.  The SHARE food items for this month are canned vegetables.

Hunger Web Site

Every 3.6 seconds someone dies of hunger.  75% of all children are underfed.  You can make a difference!  Several companies are sponsoring the hunger project which allows for 1/2 cups of staple food for a hungry person every time the site is accessed, limited to once a day.  There is no cost to you, except time and Internet access.  Access the site today (www.thehungersite.com).

From this site you can also connect to The Rainforest Site, the Kids AIDS site, the Child Survival Site, and Breast Cancer site, and the Landmine site.  A visit to each site will donate help.
