Congregational UCC launches its “Healthy Bodies, Healthy Spirits, Healthy Minds” initiative in June 2011. One element of this program is devoted to helping members, friends and families exercise their own minds. Another is to learn how we, as a church, can better serve people with mental disabilities.
QPR Training
QPR is a suicide prevention program that trains everyday people to recognize signs of potential suicidal thought and to offer simple ways to help the person get help. Pastor Gage recently completed training in the “Question, Persuade, Refer” (QPR) program and will pass along that information at two different hour-long sessions at the church on June 16 at 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
QPR explains some of the most fundamental signs that someone might be considering suicide, teaches how best to approach that person, and provides referral information that can be offered to him or her. This training saves lives.
Mental Health Devotional
Pastor Gage’s daily devotional this summer will focus on mental health issues, including depression, anxiety and dementia. Mental illness has a spiritual dimension that can be helpful in healing and living with these diseases of the mind. If you are already receiving the daily devotional, you will continue to get it in your daily email. If you would like to begin receiving it, email gage.r.church@gmail.com.
