Search Committee Progress Report

"Your Search Committee had its first meeting at the cottage on Monday, Feb. 15th. The Committee consists of Ed Boies, chairman; Felicia Cornwell, Gordon Harrington, Jeannine Heppler, Steve Holdsambeck, Slim Jolly, Gary Smith and Tom Szalay. We started working on our "Local Church Profile"(LPC) document which forms the basis for the "Call" procedure. The questionaires that you filled out last year provide a portion of the data for the LCP. Other resources include our annual reports and information from the UCC Conference Office. Please talk to your committee members if you have other input that you feel is important.  The Committee plans to have our conference minister, Tom Rehling, here on Monday, March 15th, to provide us with additional insight on the search process."
Thanks for all your work. Ed Boies

Monday, March 15, the Pastor Search Committee (PSC) meets with Rocky Mountain Conference Minister Tom Rehling. They have been meeting weekly since the February 8th combined meeting with the Church Council. PSC will share the church’s profile with the congregation when it is ready to be distributed to potential candidates. They will then keep the congregation informed as to where they are along the path to nominating a pastor to the congregation, but as they begin to receive and read profiles from potential candidates through the process of choosing one candidate to present to the congregation, their work will be kept strictly confidential.

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors would like to report that the furnace has been fixed at considerable cost. After several repairs it was found that someone had put dirt down the outside vent by the front door. This caused a serious back up of gases.

Xerox will replace the office copy machine with one of comparable value and functions. We hope this happens soon.

The church name has officially been changed. We received the completed forms from the State of Utah. Our next big project will be to have the sprinkler systems repaired under the front walk.

Gary Smith, Chairperson
Jeannine Heppler, Clerk/Secretary
Carolyn Somer, Treasurer

P.S. A Pastor’s Observation: Yes, I can well remember the days of the never failing typewriters and mimeograph machines for two page bulletins, and newsletters, plus legal pads and pencils for meetings and sermons. But just as we are learning with Toyota’s problems, things can’t be fixed with a new cable or connector of some sort in today’s world. It’s often an invisible, tiny computer chip, or a stick of RAM like Scott Nuhn installed in the office computer (it may yet need a second stick of something else to bring it totally back to life). As you may know, the church’s relatively new copier has been nothing but a headache for Jeannine and others who expect it to make copies, not chew up paper or leave black circles in the middle of a page.  Now, hopefully before this newsletter goes to print the church will have a newer model because Gary Smith negotiated a rare total recall of this machine under the same contract we’ve had with the company; saving the church a costly new contract. Thank you Gary and Scott! And thank you Jeannine for putting up with non-functioning equipment while yearning for a good old typewriter and mimeograph machine.

It's Your Turn - Sermon Subjects for March

It’s your turn—QUESTIONS OF FAITH will continue throughout the winter, spring and perhaps even into summer depending upon the response. Bob Nuhn will be taking your suggestions for sermon themes. You may write your suggestions down and put them in the offering plate as part of your offering or see that Bob gets them directly. Think of what you always wondered about in scripture, or what bothers you in matters of faith, spirituality, the Bible, or those religious phrases we heard so often such as "Jesus saves," etc. Whatever you write will be kept confidential, that is, your name will not be attached to what you write. However, if you wish to discuss whatever you write with Bob personally, please put your name on your card. We’ll see how this goes. The "Questions of Faith" may not be used every Sunday, but certainly all questions will become sermon topics at one time or another.

Sunday Coffee and Conversations

After worship in March, we will have several exciting things happening that you will want to have on your calendar. We hope you will come downstairs and join us for an hour of fun, good treats or a meal, and some good discussions on the theme:

"Faithfully Facing Dying: Critical Issues
and Decisions Surrounding Dying and Death"

Bob began this series in February on two Sundays and will continue with one more in March. This is the time schedule we plan to keep:

11:30 A.M. worship ends and we pass the peace, chat with friends and newcomers and go downstairs to enjoy coffee, goods and conversation around the tables.
12 Noon we begin the discussion session
12:45 P.M. we wrap it up get ready to go to lunch

The following is the schedule of sessions for our Coffee and Conversations. Obvious we are offering only a quick overview of these important topics, mainly offering a simple understanding of these hot issues that arise during a most important time in our lives.

March 7: Nancy Nightingale, returning to lead worship this day, will be our guest for Coffee and Conversation.

March 14: "Not Your Ordinary Potluck" with the Art Raffle Drawing and a White Elephant Fundraiser Auction

March 21: Faithfully Facing Dying III:

Brent Graham of Legacy Funeral Planning Services through Myers Mortuaries will lead an informational seminar on what happens when we died and how we can plan for this inevitable event in all of our lives. Please note: This is not a sales pitch for Meyers Mortuaries. These people know better than all of us about preplanning, obituary notices, death certificates, Social Security, insurances, Veterans Benefits, planning the Funeral, Memorial Service and/or Graveside Service (Bob Nuhn will briefly discuss these), cremation, ways we can plan for burial, etc.

March 28 is Palm/Passion Sunday, the first day of Holy Week leading us to Easter on April 4th.

Perhaps we can call this Lenten Season "Not Your Ordinary Lent." We hope you will join us for worship and these special events following.

Nancy Nightingale to Lead Worship March 7

Sunday, March 7, Nancy Nightingale will lead worship with Carolyn Somer. Many of you know Nancy as an Interfaith Minister who helps coordinate many of the interfaith activities of the community. Come to worship and welcome Nancy back to our pulpit.

Sunday, March 14 - Raffle, Potluck & Auction

Sunday, March 14, join us for worship, fun, food, and two fundraisers all on one day. In worship, we celebrate Lent with the theme "Embracing Love" and hear scripture about forgiveness and reconciliation from 2nd Corinthians 5:16-21 and Psalm 32, Jesus’ most familiar parable of the Two Sons and their Father.

After Worship, we enjoy a potluck meal around a Celtic-Irish theme (recognizing that March 17 is St. Patty’s Day). Please bring a dish of your choice, a salad, casserole or dessert.

After the meal, we will determine who wins the two paintings by Shirley Dickinson and Sue Nuhn with an Art Raffle.

After the Art Raffle we will share in the fun of a White Elephant Gifts Auction. To make this work, we ask you to bring two gifts per family. These gifts are to come under the "reuse" category of being earth-friendly. They should inspire fun, and not drain your funds. Pick two things you have that you do not need. One should be a nice gift. Perhaps something you enjoyed for many years, but you no longer notice or need, yet it might be a treat for someone else. Or offer the gift of your time to bake a birthday cake, prepare a casserole, or help with gardening chores when the weather warms up. The other gift can be a silly gift, known in some circles as a gag gift. Wrap them alike in newspaper (also earth-friendly) so we cannot tell the nice gift from the "silly" one.

Proceeds from both the Raffle and the Auction will be divided 90% to the church and 10% to a local mission project to be chosen by the Deacons.

Sunday, March 28 is Palm Sunday

In worship this Sunday, we will process into the sanctuary with palms waving, and then Nell Heller will direct a dramatic reading of Henry Van Dyke’s "The Other Wise Man." No, we don’t have our seasons mixed up. This story begins before Jesus was born and ends about thirty-three years later on that first Holy Week.

You are needed! Nell wants Readers, Dancers, Singers, people to help with costumes and staging. Please volunteer by signing up in the Signup Notebook or calling Nell TODAY! During the first two weeks of March, Nell will be working with individual readers, by appointment, who will be reading specific character in the drama. The full cast can expect three rehearsals between March 7 and Palm Sunday the 28.

With Nell’s reputation as a wonderful director and Polly’s good advertising, we hope to have many guests attend this service. To encourage guests to come and visit, we will offer a simple soup and bread luncheon for all in attendance. Please join us to make this a wonderful Palm Sunday for everyone!

Seeking Piano/Organist Accompanist

We are seeking a piano/organist accompanist to provide music leadership during our worship services on some Sundays between 10:00 am and noon.  For more information, please call or email our church office at (801) 392-5012 or ogdenucc@gmail.com.

Time for an All-Church Cookbook!

It’s been awhile since we did a church cookbook. We’ve been sharing some very good dishes with one another via our potlucks and coffee-time refreshments.  And how about the communion bread Karen Borba has provided from time to time. Wouldn’t it be fun to have the recipes for all these good eats and more?

A couple of weeks ago, Karen suggested we do a cookbook.  She even offered to help with the publication. Then I came across some recipes from the Ogden Nature Center for homemade cleaning supplies that don’t use toxic chemicals.  We’ll include some of those.

So let’s do it.  We’ll aim to get it completed in time for Mother’s Day.  Please plan to submit all recipes and other ideas for inclusion to me by Sunday, March 28.  If possible, submit your ideas and recipes via email.  Thanks for your help with this project, Carolyn Somer (csomer@q.com).

God and Family Program

All youth in grades four and five are invited to join us on March 7th at 11:30 A.M. to begin a God and Family program at the church. We will be meeting a total of six times in March and April. The God and Family program is designed to help youth understand the importance of family and God's role in a healthy family. We will celebrate the completion of the program with a pizza party on 11 April. The cost of this program is $6.50, which covers the price of the student workbook and embroidered emblem. This program is officially recognized by the Boy Scouts of America, Camp Fire USA, Girl Scouts of the USA and American Heritage Girls as the religious awards program for youth in our church and youth in those organizations are particularly encouraged to attend.

In addition to participating in the meetings and completing family projects, youth are required to share what they have learned with the pastor before they are eligible for the award, therefore Bob Nuhn will be a part of the last two sessions. Please call me, Jeni Hadden, at 801-825-3328 for more information or to register for the program. I will be leading the sessions.

The Church and the Arts

The silent auction has been changed to a raffle. Two artists, Shirley Dickinson and Sue Nuhn, have each donated a watercolor painting to the church and the Deacons thought it would be best to raffle them off so that more of us can be involved in this fundraiser for the church. Here’s the deal: The paintings are on display each Sunday until March 14th when the raffle will take place after worship as part of the "Not Your Ordinary Potluck." Between now and then you may purchase tickets at the church for $5.00 (6 tickets for $25.00), put your name on the ticket(s) and place it/them in the jar designated for the painting(s) you want a chance to win. Notice all the (s) in the last sentence? May people are buying two or more tickets and equally dividing them between the two jars for a chance to win either painting.

Shirley Dickinson is a painter in watercolor, oil and batik. A native of Virginia, Shirley began her career with commercial illustration classes but later changed to fine art with training at the Museum of Fine Art in Roanoke, Virginia. Her teachers of greatest influence have been: Katherine Chang Liu, Earnest Johnson, Al Broullette, Zoltan Szabo and Steven Quiller.

In 1990, Shirley moved to Grand Junction, Colorado, and became active at the Western Colorado Center for the Arts as a teacher of watercolor and frequent exhibitor. She was a Charter Member of the Western Colorado Watercolor Society (WCWS) and served as President and Show Chairman for several years. Her work has been accepted in national exhibitions eight times, making her eligible to become a Signature Member of WCWC.

Shirley has won numerous awards and is represented in many corporate and private collections in Virginia and Colorado. She presently lives in Kaysville, Utah, and may be contacted for private showings by appointment by contacting her at 801-656-8580. Shirley found her way to our church last year and hopes to be involved in a church and the arts program.

Sue Nuhn has always had a hunger to paint and finally listened to that call just prior to moving to Utah. She entered her first show in 2006 as part of the Cache Valley Chapter of the Utah Watercolor Society, receiving a Juror’s Award and was invited by the host galley to be a part of their next Gallery Walk. Sue was then juried into a statewide group show held at the Palmer Gallery in Salt Lake City where her painting tied for 2nd place as the People’s Choice. She has since been juried into numerous local and state competitions receiving many awards and has obtained the Two Star Status with the Utah Watercolor Society. Her watercolor and oil paintings can be found in collections in California, Ohio, Oregon, Washington and Utah. Painting is now Sue’s fulltime career. To see more of her work, you may contact Sue at 435-752-3402 or email her: suenuhn@comcast.net. She also posts painting and daily reflections on her blog at http://suenuhn.blogspot.com.

Small Group Ministries

Small Groups within a congregation are a healthy, lively way to "be" church and we hope you enjoy the variety offered this autumn. We hope you can take part in at least one or more of these groups.
